A British Columbia Supreme Court justice has convicted Inderdeep Singh Gosal of manslaughter instead of second-degree murder for the 2023 stabbing of Paul Schmidt, 37, outside a Vancouver Starbucks, after the defense argued the killing was an “overreaction due to mental illness” rather than a planned intent to kill. Schmidt, a father of three, had his three-year-old daughter in a stroller when he confronted Gosal, 34, for smoking a joint on the patio in front of his child. [snip] Justice Kathleen Ker called the attack “shocking, violent and traumatic.” She said Schmidt yelled, advanced, and threw Gosal to the ground and had the upper hand until Gosal pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Schmidt in the neck and torso. Gosal told a responding officer, “I did it. He came after me.” [snip] Defense lawyer Gloria Ng said her client’s unmedicated psychosis blurred his grasp of consequences and that manslaughter, not murder, was the right verdict.
