California Rep. Ro Khanna boasted about return of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) after historic Democratic victories across the country Tuesday — while a high-profile wealth tax measure he championed looked headed for defeat at the ballot box.

“Likely three Black governors: the first Latina governor in Texas, the first Muslim American senator, the first gay senator. I love this America tonight,” Khanna added.

His celebration came as the contentious “billionaire tax” Khanna championed appeared likely to be rejected by California voters. Amid the uncertain fate of Proposition 40, he vowed that the progressive fight to tax the uber rich was far from over.

“I’m proud of our efforts wherever we end up,” Khanna said, according to SFGate. “I am going to be right there, first in line supporting this in the next election cycle if it doesn’t pass this one.”

With approximately 48% of the expected vote tabulated by 3:25 a.m. Wednesday, Khanna held a dominant 70.5% (72,364 votes) share against Tandon’s 29.5% (30,251 votes) out of 102,615 total ballots counted.
