Sophie Cunningham is the face that launched a thousand memes.

The WNBA star recently burst onto the national scene with finger-pointing swagger.

In an interview with ESPN, she said the following:

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

“I’m very much in the middle. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”

Then, after her non-conformity to Woke dogma drew howls, she doubled down.

[snip]

“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense… I think it’s really important to protect children… I don’t dislike anyone. … I’m there to love, but I’m also there to love biological women…”

She swished both takes like a pair of free throws.

But the memo went out: Bend the knee or be destroyed.

FTW (For the Whiners) put out the hit.

“Sophie Cunningham must use caution in trans sports debate,” it ominously proclaimed.

Unlike some who go as far as to question trans identity altogether, Cunningham’s words are siloed into sports, which makes them incredibly polarizing within the league she plays, but mostly palatable in general conversation with America’s pulse on the issue. […]

Cunningham’s sentiments are widely held in the United States, yes, but they come at a time when, as NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently observed, her superstar teammate Caitlin Clark has turned into a “political football” for ongoing culture wars. Clark is a lightning rod for discourse, particularly on race, given her presence as a prominent white woman gaining intense popularity in a league largely built by Black women.

You see? If you don’t get on board with the left’s radical agenda now, we will make you surrender. Just like we did with Caitlin Clark.

Clark humiliatingly confessed after a struggle session that she definitely has “privilege” and she stands on the shoulders of black women.

[snip]

Insipid mewling. No one says “white people built basketball” because Dr. James Naismith invented the game and white players predominated in the professional sport before it allowed black players.

And it isn’t “white privilege” when you are a minority in a black player-dominated sports league and you have to work your behind off to compete.

It’s the results that matter: The basketball hoop is color blind.

Radical killjoys, however, are not colorblind; they favor a racist form of revenge called “equity.”

Clark’s apology therefore didn’t stop the Woke mob from savaging her in one of the most insane pieces ever sent out into the transom.

The thrust of the ForTheWin piece: Caitlin Clark’s admirers might actually start lynching black people due to her… foul-baiting. Seriously.

[snip]

It shouldn’t need reminding this country has an awful history of Black people being harmed, even killed, in the name of “defending” white women. The irony of the WNBA’s All-Star Game is that it’s happening this weekend in Chicago, the hometown of Emmett Till, who became an icon of the civil rights movement after his tragic murder.

Lunacy.

But this is to be expected when sports stand as a repudiation of the leftist worldview. Competition inspires individual excellence. Teams invite diversity without the need for coercion. Scores reward merit, not victimhood.

[snip]

Their popularity, driven by merit, is thus misleadingly ascribed to racial resentment; never mind that the biggest NBA superstars in America have tended to be black, rather than white.

Michael Jordan is the ultimate example of a player whose rise to superstardom was unprecedented, yet he also realized, “Republicans buy sneakers, too.” Be Like Mike.

There is also a saying ‘those who do not make you cannot break you.’ The Woke sports media is once again putting that truism to the test. In the process, it will burn its last shred of credibility to the ground.
