Our American political life is noisy and messy.

Providing simplicity can be a winning strategy. Most prefer order to noise and mess. Obama’s 2008 slogan, “Hope and Change,” proved it. It was part of his general political strategy, which he summarized memorably: “I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views.”

He did not mean that he had no political views. He had them but he hid them. He dared people to parse him correctly, making game on concealing his unpopular views under a cloud of likeable rhetoric. His two largest policies, Obama Care and the Iran deal, were both presented in a way that never gave the public a chance to evaluate what they were and to have its say.

Not that Obama Care wasn’t a prime feature of his 2008 campaign. But note the two main things about his plan as he sold it to the public: It will lower premiums for the middle class by $2,500 and you will be able to keep your provider.

Neither proved true. Average costs for comparable coverage rose by thousands and very many people found they could not be covered any more by their previous provider. When questioned about his “keeping your provider” promise, he replied, “What we said was you can keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law passed,” a claim contradicted by PolitiFact, who documented 37 instances in which Obama made his claim about providers with no reservations or qualifications.

Rumors of this new approach reached the ears of Alan Dershowtiz, a lifelong Democrat and strong Obama supporter. He came to the White House in 2012 and asked Obama for his personal assurance that he was not planning to appease the mullahs. Speaking shortly after the Iran deal had been concluded, Dershowitz recounted:

“What is the promise made directly to me in the Oval Office? [With] the president looking right into the eye [he] said, ]Take my word, Iran will not develop a nuclear weapon.’ That promise is in the process of being broken.”

“Iran didn’t have nuclear weapons because I had put a deal in place that everybody acknowledged kept them from getting nukes, and I didn’t have to fire a missile to do it.”

Anyone who knows the least thing about Obama’s Iran deal was that its restrictions went away. In a 2015 interview with Steve Inskeep, Obama acknowledged that Iran would more than likely have the ability to almost immediately have nuclear weapons when the deal expired:

Of course, he presents this as high patriotism. Why not?

Obama chose to spurn moral truth at the beginning of his first presidential run. Opponents had revealed that his mentors were terrorists (Bill Ayres et. al) and terrorist adjacent (Louis Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright). The charge was serious and he had to answer. At that moment, he could have said to America, “Yes, I was young and foolish and followed unworthy leaders. But I have learned my lesson and apologize and assure you all that, knowing the dark, I now choose the light.”

Had he chosen genuine reconciliation, he would have been an unstoppable moral force uniting this country.

Instead, he ducked responsibility, instead lecturing America on racism — a Machiavellian maneuver, smoothly tarring all critics present or future as racist. Textbook narcissism: claiming the good reputation due to those who sacrifice for moral truth — without having sacrificed.

Got some large debts to pay off on his brutalist library that just stiffing his contractors can’t make up.

What we can thank Obama for is reminding us of what this midterm is really about — will we choose Third World politics and a return to the Obama-led descent to Third World status? Obama and the DSA Dems offer palliative care for an America too addled and befuddled to resist the wave of lies.

[snip]

Ask questions of these Obama assertions:

Iran is winning? He wants it to be the truth, and he thinks he can get you to be complicit in projecting that truth onto the election. So, ask why then is Iran’s air force decimated, its navy destroyed, its missiles depleted, its Bomb program derailed, and its military leadership down to the third stringers?

Iran has complete control of the Straits of Hormuz? Ask why, then, the left-leaning front page of the Wall Street Journal last week reported that more oil is being shipped through it to market than before the war?

[snip]

And it is that man who has devoted more than a decade of his life to taking down Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu spoke the truth about Obama’s Iran deal in America’s capitol, having been invited by Congress for that purpose. That is a deadly heresy for Obama’s creed of projections. Hatred of the heretic has overruled every other consideration. Taking Bibi down seems very personal.

For the rest of us, who realize that truth cannot be trifled with, Obama’s is a distorted mirror realm of moral resentment. As Victor Davis Hanson so correctly pointed out this week, Obama is a man utterly unaware of his profound inner contradictions. Instead of seeking that awareness, he prefers to try to suck all who will listen into his world of projections, asking you to despair of any truth other than his.

Underneath that, the party has abandoned itself to those who celebrate the rapists, torturers, and slaughterers of October 7, and call only their victims genocidal. The great center of the party has become like Winston Smith — they love Big Brother. And they didn’t have to be tortured to get there.

The only way the sane and the centrists will have any say in their party is if the current party is routed on Tuesday. As someone who detests one-party governments, I pray that it may happen. I would like once more to be able to consider voting for one of their candidates.

But as the captain of the submarine said in the movie, “Not yet, my friends, not yet.”

Fight on. Make sure you vote.
