Birmingham Council wants to ban British flags from streets over ‘public safety’ amid Muslim invasion

The Birmingham City Council has announced plans to seek a High Court injunction to prevent residents from placing Union Jack and St. George’s Cross flags on lampposts and other locations along public highways in the city.

The move comes as activist groups calling for greater patriotism and a tougher stance on immigration have placed the flags on lampposts across Birmingham. The displays have led to clashes with opposing groups, who argue that displaying the flags is divisive and hateful.

The proposed injunction named organizers, including Ryan Bridge, and would prevent “unauthorised attachments on the highway, including flags, banners and signage.”

“Community engagement will continue alongside the legal process,” the council said.

Bridge, who founded the initiative Operation Raise the Colours, said in October that the campaign was not intended to be divisive but rather to demonstrate pride and unity in “a multi-faith, multi-religion, multicultural country.”

Birmingham councillor Jane Baston, the cabinet member for equalities, communities and social justice, said in a statement that “the council is taking a lawful, proportionate and evidence-led approach to unauthorised attachments on the highway.”

“This includes pursuing injunctive action based on the evidence gathered to date,” Baston said. “Our priority is to protect public safety, staff and contractor welfare, community cohesion and the responsible use of public funds. We ask residents and community groups to support this approach and to ensure any displays are placed only where permission exists.”

Nearly one-third of Birmingham’s population is now Muslim, according to The Telegraph. Reform UK councillors previously faced backlash earlier this year for demanding an “English-only” rule for city council meetings after an Imam cited an Arabic verse from the Quran at a mayoral swearing-in ceremony.
