The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has reached agreements with two of the largest health care systems in the country in which they will both cease providing transgender medical interventions to minors. New York University Langone Hospitals (NYU) and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) will no longer provide services such as administering puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones and performing surgical procedures to children, according to the DOJ in a statement on Friday. [snip] “The Department of Justice is fighting to protect our nation’s children and working tirelessly to reach agreements with hospitals to end so-called ‘gender affirming care’ for minors,” stated Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Today’s resolutions send a clear message: hospitals that target children in these practices and then fraudulently obtain payment for the procedures will be held to account.” DOJ Secures Agreements with NYU and UPMC to End Pediatric “Gender-Affirming Care”“The Department of Justice is fighting to protect our nation’s children and working tirelessly to reach agreements with hospitals to end so-called ‘gender affirming care’ for minors,” said… pic.twitter.com/zupfBA1yjf— U.S. Department of Justice (@TheJusticeDept) September 18, 2026 [snip] “UPMC chose to resolve the matter to avoid prolonged litigation, protect patients and families from unnecessary disclosure of sensitive personal and health information, protect employees, and remain focused on patient care and advancing its core mission,” a statement from the Pittsburgh-based medical facility stated. “NYU Langone has not entered into this settlement because of any wrongdoing and has affirmatively denied any wrongdoing or liability in the agreement,” NYU spokesperson Steve Ritea said. “We believe this resolution is in the best interests of our patients and their families, protecting them as well as our providers and the institution from prolonged litigation.” The DOJ acknowledged the two medical providers’ cooperation throughout its investigations. [snip] The results for NYU and UPMC came after similar agreements were struck with Mount Sinai Health System in New York, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Connecticut Children’s Hospital. The federal government has attempted to rein in Rady Children’s Hospital, California’s largest pediatric health care system, but California’s Attorney General filed a lawsuit against the hospital, forcing it to continue transgender care — not including surgeries — until legal proceedings are final. NYU announced the shuttering of its transgender care programs in February, but only finalized the closure after the DOJ’s investigation.
