Addressing a gathering of law enforcement officers and firefighters at a White House Rose Garden luncheon, President Donald Trump announced that he has directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to seek the death penalty in cases involving the murder of a firefighter.

This directive expands upon his previous calls to mandate capital punishment for individuals convicted of killing police officers.

“They’re shot at [while] going up ladders,” Trump said. “They get shot up in some neighborhoods….”

At the luncheon, chairman of the National Volunteer Fire Council Steve Hirsch notably presented Trump with a helmet and offered a blessing for his protection.
