No English? No commercial driver’s license. The feds are right to slam the brakes on a ridiculous number of driving schools that churn out licensed truck drivers who can’t read the signs of the road. This week, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy ordered 110 driving schools shuttered — including 11 in California — due to a stunning lack of ABCs. [snip] (Obviously.) “By far, the worst abusers are in California under Gavin Newsom’s leadership,” added Markwayne Mullin, US secretary of homeland security. (Sigh.) The schools, with names like “TRUCKMASTER CDL SCHOOL” and “GO4CDL LLC,” include locations in Southern California, the Bay Area and the Central Valley, The Post found. They charge applicants thousands of dollars apiece for commercial driver’s license training, which typically requires at least 160 hours of instruction. Somehow, an alarming number of certified drivers emerge from those programs unable to read basic road signs — an egregious public danger. [snip] In another example, Harjinder Singh, who’d failed the commercial driver’s license test multiple times in the state of Washington, obtained a commercial license in California — and went on to cause an August 2025 crash in Florida that killed three people. After the accident, transportation officials said he flunked an English proficiency test and misidentified basic highway signs. [snip] It should be obvious: Those who can’t read simple road signs should be nowhere near the wheel of a 40-ton semi-truck.
