ICE Arrests Guatemalan National In Indiana For Voting In Federal Election

Federal immigration officers tracked down and arrested a Guatemalan woman in Indianapolis earlier this month, accusing her of casting an illegal ballot in a past national election.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents picked up Helda Araceli Mendez-Merida on Sept. 3 during a planned arrest operation, according to a release from the Department of Homeland Security.

Now, DHS says she is finally headed out of the country after allegedly participating in an election where she was not legally allowed to vote.

“The patriots of ICE arrested this illegal alien from Guatemala after she illegally voted in a past election,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “This illegal alien will be deported so she can never again poison our elections. If even one non-citizen casts a vote, it steals a vote from an American citizen. The Trump Administration is committed to protecting and upholding the integrity of our election system so that only the American people are choosing American leaders and making decisions for our country.”

The government did not say which election year Mendez-Merida voted in, where she cast the ballot, or if she will face separate criminal charges before ICE puts her on a plane back to Guatemala. For now, she is sitting in federal custody awaiting removal.
