The U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing a confrontation that broke out during a Portland Thorns soccer match on Friday after spectators unfurled a “Save Women’s Sports” banner and venue security ejected them, according to a report by OutKick.

The incident occurred at Providence Park during Portland’s match against the North Carolina Courage. Video footage from the stadium showed members of the group being struck with flagpoles displaying transgender flags, confronted with profanity, and removed by security personnel.

According to OutKick’s Jackson Thompson, roughly 20 attendees wore shirts from XX-XY Athletics, keeping them covered through the first half of the match. At the start of the second half, the group revealed the shirts and unrolled a large banner reading “Save Women’s Sports,” drawing immediate pushback from nearby fans.

Sousa told OutKick that she and other attendees filed police reports following the match.

“We were attacked by fans. We were hit with flags,” Sousa said.

The Portland Police Bureau confirmed that two potential crimes were reported following the match.

“Off-duty PPB officers are routinely hired to work at professional games and other events at various venues in Portland, and there were several at the Thorns game last night. PPB officers were not involved in any removals. They were called in when some individuals were refusing to leave and laying down, blocking an exit. When asked by police officers, the individuals agreed to leave. Outside, in an effort to promote public safety, officers did separate two groups with opposing viewpoints for a short time,” Sgt. Kevin Allen told Fox News Digital.

Under federal civil rights law, prosecutors can examine whether public officials or private individuals acting alongside them unlawfully restricted constitutionally protected expression. The Justice Department has not announced any formal charges or cited specific statutory violations regarding the incident.
